The Barriers Hindering the Creation of Decent Job Opportunities

The article by Zeynep Ton discusses the obstacles faced by industries in creating good jobs, which include low pay, unpredictable schedules, and few opportunities for advancement. However, some companies like Costco, QuikTrip, and Mercadona have been able to remain market leaders in their industries without resorting to bad jobs by adopting 'good jobs' systems. These systems involve investing in employees by providing better pay, benefits, and training, which leads to higher productivity, sales, and growth. The article emphasises that companies that maintain the status quo will see rising labour costs without any improvement in employee turnover or output. Courage is required to adopt good jobs systems, but the benefits are worth it.

The above is my summary from " The Obstacles to Creating Good Jobs", Harvard Business Review (May- June 2023)/Reprint S23031
